Create an outdoor dining room in your balcony

AFTER

My clients brief was to create an outdoor dining area in their new balcony.

They wanted it to fit a dining table for six people, their existing plant stand and a cat scratching tower. After measuring the space of the balcony, I got down to finding the right pieces. The reason why they did not want it in the house was space constraints in the living room. By combining their love for the sea and their favourite colour blue, we shortlisted pieces that reminded them of their travels in Bali. I always believe if you understand the purpose and reason of each space it will enable you to design and style the space with more clarity and direction.

We started by doing a custom made ceiling plant hanging trellis to go with the colour of the balcony wall and I am so happy with how it turned out. This extra ceiling feature allows for more hanging spaces for my client growing plants collection and we added a wind chime.

After installing the ziptrack, an outdoor blind system which minimise dust, rain and sunlight to protect the balcony from rain or shine, I got down to decorating. Here are 5 items I added to transform the space.

  1. An outdoor area rug, I wanted to continue the blue story that is happening in the living room and blue is my client favourite colour.

  2. By adding a statement rattan lamp, the vibe of the balcony reminds them of the coastal resort living vibes in Bali, one of their favourite holiday destination.

  3. The dining set to fit 6 people was chosen to compliment the rattan lampshade colour and the light oak colours has the ability to make a space look more spacious.

  4. One of my favourite things to add on a dining table is a table runner, it helps draw the eyes to the centre and it adds colour and pattern on a plain wood table.

  5. The last touch was including more ceiling plant hangings by the dining zone to tie in the plant story on the opposite side of the balcony.
